Victor diamond raises $78,320 for T&DH

On December 17, 2009 - The Timmins & District Hospital (T&DH) Foundation raised an incredible $78,320 by raffling off a beautiful one-carat diamond donated by the De Beers Canada Victor Mine. The funds raised are in support of the 2007-2009 “Give… for the Health of it!” Campaign. The campaign aims to renovate the Operating Room Suites, expand the Dialysis Department and purchase much-needed medical equipment for T&DH.

“The Timmins and District Hospital is a key health care partner for the De Beers Canada Victor Mine, so we are pleased to have been able to assist the T&DH in raising funds that will improve health care for our employees and the people of Northeastern Ontario. We look forward to building on this partnership in the years to come,” said Tom Ormsby, Director of External & Corporate Affairs for De Beers Canada.

The lucky winner of the one-carat diamond valued at $20,000 was Gary Marriott of Timmins. The $25,000 total prize package includes the Victor Mine diamond, the mounting of a pendant or a ring valued up to $1,000 that was donated by Cousineau Fine Jewellery, the transportation of the diamond donated by Brinks Canada, a day trip for two to the De Beers Canada Victor Mine in Attawapiskat and visit to the cutting and polishing plant in Sudbury.

The De Beers Canada Victor Mine also recently donated seven paintings by local Aboriginal artist Gordin Goodwin of Kashechewan to the hospital’s new Spiritual Place, a specialized room primarily meant for Aboriginal, First Nations, and Métis in-patients of the hospital in order to provide them the opportunity to participate in healing ceremonies and a place for meditation.
