Snap Lake Mine Employee Event Tops $12,000 for Terry Fox Foundation
YELLOWKNIFE (August 11, 2010) - Employees at De Beers Canada Snap Lake Mine opened their hearts and their wallets on August 9th, raising more than $12,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation.
The money was collected in an employee-organized head-shave. Four brave individuals offered to have their heads shaved and actively collected pledges over the past few weeks. Two others, seeing they could bring the total funds raised upward, stepped forward to participate during the event. Participants and contributors included both De Beers Canada employees and contractors.
“Our employees are generous and enthusiastic about working together for the benefit of others, whether they are volunteering in the community or staging an event like this at site,” said Cathie Bolstad, Director External and Corporate Affairs. “We are very proud of them as this is not the first time they have come together to raise money for charity, and have asked us to help.”
Money was raised through pledges, an auction for the chance to shave one of the heads and the company topped off funds raised by employees, adding $5,000. The hair cut from two of the participants has been donated to Locks of Love, which uses donated hair to make wigs for children suffering hair loss due to medical conditions.
The total amount raised in the event may increase as donations are continuing to come in. Employees are now planning to hold a Terry Fox Run at the mine site in September, building on the $3,262 raised at the Snap Lake Terry Fox Run last year and this event.
De Beers Canada opened Snap Lake Mine, 220 km northeast of Yellowknife, NT, in July 2008. The workforce averages 370 De Beers employees and contractors at the mine site each day.
