Our company-wide Environmental Management Policy establishes the importance of protecting the environment wherever the company operates. The policy is based on being a good steward of the environment on respect for the land where we are working. This means that all employees and contractors are expected to work in a way that honors our commitments, and that respects and complies with legislation and all conditions of the mine’s licenses and permits.
At the Snap Lake Mine, De Beers is proud to have earned and maintained ISO 14001 (www.iso.ch) certification during the planning and construction of the mine.
Ongoing compliance with ISO 14001, as well as compliance with the regulatory requirements is assured through extensive ongoing monitoring and regular independent audits of the company’s environmental management systems and performance.
Significant training is provided on an ongoing basis to ensure employees and contractors understand their roles and responsibilities in protecting the environment.
De Beers ratified an environmental agreement with the GNWT, Government of Canada and Aboriginal organizations from primary communities on May 31, 2004. This Agreement establishes the Snap Lake Environmental Monitoring Agency (SLEMA), which monitors implementation of the Environmental Agreement, and De Beers' environmental performance. The agency consists of representatives of Aboriginal communities, with support from a secretariat, and expertise from a technical and science panel as well as Traditional Knowledge panels.
