RICHARD MOLYNEUX RETIRES AS PRESIDENT AND CEO OF DE BEERS CANADA
Toronto – February 27, 2006 - Following a 35-year career with Anglo American and De Beers, six of which were spent as the President and CEO of De Beers Canada Inc., Richard Molyneux will be retiring at the end of April 2006. Richard will be replaced by Jim Gowans who will be joining De Beers Canada on March 27, 2006.
Richard began his career as an exploration geologist, working in various areas of South Africa. During his time with De Beers he distinguished himself by demonstrating a knowledge and aptitude for the many complex aspects of diamond exploration and mining. Prior to becoming President and CEO of De Beers Canada in 2000, he held a number of positions within De Beers including Resident Geologist at Premier Mine, Chief Geologist at Namaqualand Mines, then General Manager of Namaqualand Mines and General Manager of Central Mines in Kimberley where he had overall responsibility for the Kimberley, Koffiefontein and Finsch mines.
Richard is recognized for his deep commitment to sustainable development and sound environmental management and he has always sought to make a positive difference to the communities associated with the projects and mines he has had responsibility for.
Richard hands over responsibility for De Beers' Canadian operations to Jim Gowans, whose career in the mining industry spans 30 years. Jim has an impressive track record working for large mining companies such as Inco, Placer Dome and Cominco. Jim is a Canadian who has recently been the Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of PT Inco in Indonesia, and he brings with him a wealth of experience in operations management, mine development, strategic planning and stakeholder management.
De Beers is deeply grateful to Richard for the contribution he has made in developing the Canadian operations and wishes him well as he moves into the next phase of his career. Jim Gowans is welcomed to the De Beers Canada team as the company moves its diamond projects into production.
