Chantal Lavoie

Chantal Lavoie was appointed Vice President of NWT Projects in April 2006. Reporting directly to the President and Chief Executive Officer, he is responsible for overseeing the successful permitting of new projects in Northwest Territories and for ensuring the successful commissioning and sustainable operations of mines in the NWT.

Chantal joined De Beers in August 2003 as Mine Manager for the Snap Lake Project, leaving Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. in Elko, Nevada (USA) where he was Manager of the Underground Division and responsible for all aspects of underground operations. At Barrick, he oversaw all aspects of two gold mines with an annual production of 1.7 million tonnes of ore and 620,000 ounces of gold. As Mine Manager for the Snap Lake Project, he led the development of operational capability for the future Snap Lake Mine and provided approvals on all engineering and design work related to the future mine's infrastructure. He also directed the underground
pre-development work (Phase One) at Snap Lake in 2004 and 2005.

Chantal has worked in the mining industry for over 20 years holding a variety of positions, including Chief Mine Engineer, General Foreman, Mine Superintendent. His experience includes project feasibility studies, mine design and development as well as leadership in ongoing technical and underground operations. As Project Superintendent at Barrick from 1999 to 2003, he managed all technical services, mine development and construction related to the Rodeo Project, a 2500 to 3000 tpd highly mechanized underground gold operation using long hole and drift and fill mining method.

Chantal holds a Diploma of Collegial Studies in Sciences from the Collège de Maisonneuve in Montreal and a Bachelor in Mining Engineering from Universitè Laval, Quebec. He is a professional engineer registered in the Northwest Territories and the province of Quebec, and is a member of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.
