John Hughes
John Hughes has worked for De Beers for two decades. He is SVP - New Business Development and in this capacity is responsible for seeking new business opportunities, strategic planning and assisting in negotiations with government and joint venture partners in Canada.
John was previously responsible for negotiating and administering diamond trading contracts with African producer governments and for Producer Relations in Namibia and Tanzania. He was a director of De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd and served on the Boards of De Beers' operating affiliates in Botswana, Namibia and Tanzania, as well as De Beers Marine. He chaired the Administrative Committee of De Beers in Johannesburg.
John has a BSc in Civil Engineering from the University of Cape Town, and, as a Rhodes Scholar, a Master of Philosophy in Management Studies from Oxford University. He enjoys mountain biking, golf and skiing.
